CBD Oil for Pain Relief – Does it Really Work?

CBD oil for pain relief may sound like another too-good-to-be-true scam, but recent studies have shown that it really does work. But how?

**WARNING: SCIENCE CONTENT** … Explained as best I can from what I understand 🙂

The human body has a system called the endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system contains two cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. CB1 is found in the brain and connects with the cognitive actions, such as coordination, mood, thinking, memory, and appetite. The chemical THC or tetrahydrocannabinol attaches to the CB1 Receptors. This is why ingesting or smoking marijuana has cognitive effects, like altered mood, mental processing, and physical coordination. The THC is interfering with the body’s natural production and uptake of cannabinoids specifically governing cognitive functions. So if some of these cognitive systems are malfunctioning naturally, this is why doctors would prescribe medical marijuana to treat their patients.

But what about CBD?

While CB1 receptors are connected with cognitive functions, CB2 Receptors are found in the immune system in the areas responsible for the body’s response to pain and inflammation. The cannabinoids in CBD oil effects the CB2 receptors. CBD entices the body to make more of its own cannabinoids to activate the body’s pain response system. This has a positive effect on inflammation and pain. Many arthritis and chronic pain sufferers claim to see a reduction of inflammation and pain when taking CBD. Because CBD oil contains a negligible amount of THC (if any) — a still restricted substance — it is not considered a “drug” or “medication”, but a supplement. Hence, it is widely available over the counter and online.

As always, you should do thorough research and talk to your health care professional before beginning to use any supplement for a medical condition.
